The visual Arts program at MVCS, under the direction of Jeanie Killiam, begins with our preschool through lower elementary students and focuses on a broad range of art experiences, including drawing skills, painting, printmaking, color theory, and textiles that incorporate art with scripture.  As our students move through upper elementary, junior high, and high school, they are encouraged to develop art techniques such as perspective and portraiture that will augment their creative and artistic develpoment with an underlying Biblical worldview.  Each student has the opportunity to showcase their work at Imageo Deo Fine Arts Festival each year and they are eligible for competition in the ASCI Regional Arts Festival.

High school students from local Assemblies of God youth groups are eligible to enter in a large variety of arts categories for both District and National competition. Main divisions include Art, Communication, Drama, Exhibition, Instrumental, Vocal, and Writing.

Student work chosen from the District Fine Arts Festival will be eligible for entry for the National Assemblies of God Youth Fine Arts Festival each year. For further information and RULES about Fine Arts Festival, please visit the site at www.faf.ag.org.

The Band program at MVCS, under the direction of Chris Coleman, consists of three distinct levels providing an opportunity for students from 5th grade up to participate at varying skill levels.

Symphonic Band: 

• This is the most advanced band at MVCS, is by audition only and open to students that have been playing for three or more years. The Symphonic band has played at a variety of local community events, including events sponsored by Mayor Oscar Goodman, and they have played nationally in Washington D.C.  This band has also competed in the ASCI Band and Music Festival.

Concert Band:

• The Concert Band is a group that is open to all students that have played for one year or more. The Concert Band focuses on continued growth in musicality and peformance and performs several times during the year as well as special event along with the Symphonic Band.

Cadet Band:

• The Cadet Band is a two year program that is open to students 5th grade and up.  This band is tailored toward the beginner as students learn basic fundamentals of music as well as learn about the instrument of their choice.  Instruments to choose from are:  Percussions (drums), Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto/Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone or Baritone.

With the opening of our commerical kitchen, Paul McClanahan, a graduate of California Culinary Academy, started the Culinary Arts Program with a focus on several aspects of cooking. Restaurant history, technique, safety, sanitation, equipment, classical cooking, practical cooking and cooking terminology are just a few of the many areas covered in the culinary program.

Over the last 10 years, the field of Culinary Arts has reached “rock star” status.  Celebrity Chefs, T.V. networks and high end restaurants saturate the industry.  At MVCS Leadership Institute students have the opportunity to learn about the industry hands on.  Whether you are thinking about the culinary industry for your future,  just want to learn how to cook, or looking to enhance your future marriage.  The Culinary Arts program at MVCS is the place to start cookin’.

Beginning this fall, Culinary Arts II will be added as an honors elective.  Students will have hours of hands on time running a working kitchen.  Ordering, receiving, inventory, food prep and production, product creation and marketing are just some of the departments they will be responsible for. The Culinary Arts Program fulfills a fine arts credit or a general elective credit.  All participating students will be required to purchase a chef’s jacket and pay a supplemental fee to cover some food costs.

The MVCS drama program begain in 2008. Under the direction of Dean Rodriguez, the drama class has performed a variety of programs to include: “Godspell”, “Virgil’s Wedding”, and “Acting Can Be Murder”.

Under the direction of Charles Holcombe, MVCS students have the opportunity to learn the basics of producing, editing, and shooting for television and video. Students gain hands on experience as well as knowledge in broadcasting theory.  The media arts class has produced a variety of videos and commercials and they provide technical support for MVCS events.
