Preschool (18mo - 4 years):
Core Values - MVCS will introduce children to a loving God who is both our Creator and our Savior. We will teach the children using a balance of work and play by incorporating center-based learning along with structured curriculum to teach academic and social skills necessary for a successful transition into our kindergarten program. MVCS will model and instill positive character attributes by establishing age-appropriate routines and using a proactive discipline plan.
Staff - All preschool staff members have FBI background checks, Metro Sheriff cards, and health cards. They are also CPR and first aide qualified.
Curriculum - Children are assigned to classes according to birthdays as of September 30th, and will be taught through a blend of hands on centers and Christian curriculum materials.
Accident / Incident Reports - Accident reports will be sent home as necessary. The center will call parents directly in the case of illness and serious injury. Behavior incidents will be discussed at pick up.
Communication and Change of Information Forms - E-mail accounts are set up for each family using the school wide RenWeb system. Change of information slips are available in all offices. Please use them to notify the director of new phone numbers or a change of pick up status. Drop them off in the Preschool Office.
Emergency Plan - Information for fire drill and shelter in place procedures is located in the classrooms. In the event of an evacuation, our relocation site is the Chuck Minker Sports Complex on Mojave and Stewart. The preschool after hours emergency number is 279-9388.
Snacks / Lunch - Snack is provided at 9:30am and 2:30pm. Children may bring sack lunches or purchase hot lunches; they are $3.00 daily. Menus are posted in the classrooms and the web site. Perishable items should be labeled and placed in the class basket for refrigeration.
Naptime Needs - Nap pads are provided by the center. Children will need a crib sheet to cover their nap pads and a small blanket and pillow. Store naptime items in the children’s backpacks and take them home weekly.
Classroom Visits/Special Events - Please enter through the main entrance and stop by the school office for a visitor’s pass. There is no smoking permitted on the school property. Brief classroom visits for the purpose of observation may be scheduled through the teacher; they must be limited to a one hour period.
Discipline - Our staff uses redirection and timeout to encourage positive behavior. No physical punishment in any manner or form shall be inflicted upon any child (City of Las Vegas Childcare directives, Article 3 A (11). Severe discipline issues will be handled through the office.
Medical Release Forms - If your child is in need of medication during the day, please fill out a medical release form and turn it in with the medicine to the teacher on duty or the director. All medications will be given by the preschool director and will be stored, along with Nebulizers, in the preschool office. Only prescription medications can be administered. Sick children including those with a temperature over 100 degrees will be sent home.
Volunteers - City licensing requires that those working with preschool age children have a child care Sheriff’s card and a child care/food handler health card; this includes volunteers. (This regulation does not apply to parties, field trips, and school assemblies). Parents who wish to volunteer may make an appointment with the director.
Emergency Rate / Emergency Procedures - Our facility closes at 6:00 pm; the after hour emergency rate is $1.00 per minute per child. The staff will make every attempt to contact all of the emergency numbers, however, in the event that no one can be reached, Metro will be notified and children will be transported to Child Haven.
Concerns - The school office is open from 7:30 am-5:00 pm each day. Either the Administrator or Assistant Director will be available during those times to help you. Classroom concerns should first be referred to the classroom teacher according to the Biblical principle found in Matthew 18. Our center is under the jurisdiction of the City of Las Vegas; they can be reached at 229-6281 should you need assistance.
Elementary School (Kindergarten-4th Grade):
MVCS students will participate weekly in Art, Physical Education, Computer, Media Center, and Music. Please check with your child’s home room teacher for their elective times.
Junior High Prep (5th and 6th Grade):
MVCS 5th and 6th Grade student’s are on a block schedule, with three elective classes per semester. Their elective courses are assigned and will switch in the Second Semester. The electives include Art, Foreign Language, Physical Education, Computer, Music, and Band.
Junior High School (7th and 8th Grade):
MVCS Junior High School students are on a block schedule, with three elective classes per school year. Junior High students select their electives from a variety of courses and our 8th grade students have the opportunity to earn high school credit for some electives.
High School (9th - 12th Grade):
The selection of students into our elective classes is based upon the combination of a student’s seniority and how it affects their 4-year plan. Students are required to have seven (7) credits of elective classes in order to graduate from Mountain View Christian High School. These classes break down in the areas of Fine Arts: Art, Choir, Concert Band, Culinary Arts, Drama, Journalism, Sequential Art, Symphonic Band, Media Arts and Yearbook. Foreign Language: Spanish 1, Spanish 2, French 1, French 2. Computer: Computer, Web Design, Media Arts. Physical Education & Fitness: Physical Education, Health, Anatony and Exercise Physiology. Participation on a varsity team equals 0.5 credits per season. Cheerleaders earn 1 credit per season.
Freshman Year (9)
The biggest advantage a high school student can have is a great start - focus on starting you high school career with grades that show excellence from the beginning. Students and parents are to schedule a meeting with our Guidance Conselor to develop a four (4) year college plan by viewing high school graduation requirements, college recommended course, career plans, community service, and building an extra-curricular resume. This plan is developed in the beginning of the freshman year and reviewed and revised each year with adjustments made for academic performance, personal interest, and revised career plans.
Sophomore Year (10)
The Nevada Proficiency Exams will be given. Review and revise four (4) year college plan. Continue to encourage community service projects. Sophomores should begin to look at scholarships and grants in their area of interest along with narrowing down a list of the types of schools that are appealing to them. Big or small? Christian or Public? Urban or Rural?
Junior Year (11)
The Nevada Proficiency Exams will be given. It is Beneficial to register and take SATs or ACTs. Review and revise your four (4) year college plan. Juniors are advised to continue to community service involvement, identify the characteristics of a college that matter to you: size geographical location, academic rigor, diversity, and social. Students are advised to compile a resume of activities, honors, leadership positions, and jobs this information will be helpful when applying for colleges.
Senior Year (12)
Take the Nevada Proficiency Exam (if necessary). Narrow your college search to three or four schools. Work closely with MVCS guidance counselor to ensure that all credits have been up to date and that all college and scholarship application dead lines are meet. Students are advised to update their resume, participate in community service, enhance writing skills for scholarships and college admissions, and compile letters of recommendation. MVCS will also direct students to college fairs and workshops on financial aid assistance.
Student Services: A variety of services are offered at MVCS to help students at every grade level to reach their academic potential.
Student Advocacy Services:The SAS team is a referral service dedicated to providing high quality services to help students, their parents, and the staff to apply educational strategies and practices that promote success. Members of the team include administrators, teachers, specialists, and medical personnel. Referrals for assistance are available through the classroom teacher.
Tutorial Services: Individualized and small group tutoring services are available after school in our resource center to help students build the fundamental academic skills and study habits necessary to succeed. (This program is available to students referred by the SAS team).
General Tutoring: Teachers at all grade levels hold weekly tutoring sessions to reinforce current material that is presented in class and to assist students as they prepare for tests.
